1994 Everyone Is Asleep — Calm Dreamwave & Ambient Vaporwave

Post-Soviet1 track

Vaporwave grew out of a small Internet experiment around 2010-2011, codified by Macintosh Plus's Floral Shoppe in 2011: slowed and chopped 80s/90s samples paired with corporate-mall imagery. Dreamwave and the "liminal late-night" subset moved further into ambient territory, often built around the conceit of being awake at 4am in a 1990s suburb when nothing is happening. The "everyone is asleep" format is part of that lineage.

Vaporwave dates fast as an aesthetic but the slower ambient subset has aged better than the obvious-90s-sample stuff. I put this on for late-night work specifically. The implied silence around the music does something different than just playing ambient. There's an emotional setup baked in.
