Montmartre in the Rain — Paris Night Walk

Montmartre is the right part of Paris for this. It sits on a hill above the rest of the city with narrow streets that were never widened for cars, so the traffic noise the boulevards carry never really arrives — what you get instead is rain on stone, footsteps, and the occasional door. The steep staircases and the way the streetlights sit low make it read as a village that happens to be inside a capital.

The rain does most of the acoustic work here. Wet cobbles are a completely different surface to wet asphalt: shorter reflections, more scatter, none of the tyre hiss that dominates the New York and London walks in this catalog. If those two are the loud end of the city collection, this is the quiet end, and it holds up much better as reading background.
