Half-Life 2 — Lab Practicum (Bridge Music)
Kelly Bailey scored Half-Life 2 for Valve in 2004, building the whole soundtrack from software synthesizers in Sonic Foundry ACID rather than live instruments, which is why it sits somewhere between industrial, ambient, and film score. 'Lab Practicum' is one of the quieter cues — a slow pad-and-drone piece that the game triggers as Gordon Freeman edges across the wrecked suspension bridge in the Highway 17 chapter.
It's maybe ninety seconds of music in the game, looped and stretched here into something you can actually sit with. The bridge sequence is all vertigo and wind, and the track leans into that with almost nothing happening: a held tone, a few detuned swells. I keep it on for writing when I want tension without a beat pulling at my attention. Bailey never put out a proper stems release, so most of what circulates is ripped straight from the game files.
