Silent Hill — Dark Horror Ambient OST
Akira Yamaoka scored the entire original Silent Hill trilogy plus Silent Hill 3 and 4, defining the sonic identity of the survival horror genre in the process. His palette mixes industrial drone, distorted guitar, broken music-box piano, and sparse ambient texture into something more melancholic than scary. Tracks like "Promise", "Theme of Laura", and "Tender Sugar" get cited regularly as some of the best video game music ever written, regardless of genre.
I came to Silent Hill late, through SH2's piano pieces showing up in playlists before I'd ever played the games. "Promise" will absolutely wreck you the first time you hear it in context. The score also works as standalone listening, which is why it's here. Good for late-night writing, weirdly, or for evenings when you don't want anything cheerful but also don't want to commit to full ambient drone.
