Synthwave — Retro 80s Electronic Vibes
Synthwave coalesced as a genre around 2010-2012, kicked off by Kavinsky's contribution to the Drive soundtrack and by labels like Rosso Corsa Records. The sound is built on analog-style synth leads, gated reverb drums, and arpeggiated basslines pulled from John Carpenter scores and 80s film soundtracks. The genre branched fast into subgenres: outrun for car-cruising energy, darksynth for the heavier Carpenter Brut end.
I came up on this stuff during the 2014-2016 wave when basically every YouTuber's intro music was a Mitch Murder track. It's held up better than most internet-era genres, probably because the source material it imitates already aged well. Default coding soundtrack for a lot of people I know.
