Rain on library windows, candlelit gothic ambience and slow classical piano — quiet, wordless backdrops that sit behind a book instead of in front of it.

Reading is the hardest case for background music, because language is the one thing that genuinely competes with it. Anything with a vocal will pull your eyes off the line, and even a strong melody can start narrating the page. So this list is stricter than the others: field recordings, ambience, and piano that moves slowly enough to disappear.
The dark academia corner — rain against a library window, a Victorian street in autumn, candlelight and distant thunder — is the closest thing to a purpose-built reading soundtrack, and it does a lot of work setting a mood before you have read a page. The Chopin, Debussy and Satie recordings are the alternative if you would rather have music than weather. The game ambiences at the end are here because they were composed to sit under something else, which is exactly the skill required.
